Student and researcher started a business in VGTU

Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) tandem – a student and a researcher – created an innovative material – cellulose nanocrystals, derived from the fibre of hemp, grown in Lithuania. They can use the raw material, visually similar to flour, for the production of compositional bioplastics. Food packaging, made from such an environmentally friendly material, would be ecological and would break up quicker.   Currently, one of the most common food packaging is plastic, which accounts for about ten per cent of all waste in Lithuania. In our country, about fifty thousand tons of plastic packaging appear on the market, about […]

Few days ago we still operated with Litas, a national currency which served Lithuania well for more than two decades, but from 1st of January everything is priced in euros. If you have some litas saved, you will be able to change them to euros free of charge at the rate of 1 euro to 3.45 litas (or spend them in […]

That special time of the year

Christmas is less than two weeks away, it is starting to snow from time to time, trees with Christmas lights are all over the place and we can officially state that we are ready to celebrate! 😉 Christmas is one of the most important festivities of the year in Lithuania, and we have some special traditions attached to it. For example on the Eve of Christmas, Lithuanians gather for a supper which has to consist of at least 12 dishes (all meatless). We break bread, say a prayer and feast. This happens after whole day without food, so you can […]

More students chose Lithuania

1589 international students began their degree studies in Lithuania this autumn, bringing the total of international students to 4618. This continues a steady growth of 10-15% every year, and the trend is not likely to reverse. Last year, when we made a survey asking whether international students in Lithuania would recommend us to their friends, nine out of ten agreed that they would. Now we can say – they did and they still do! If you were considering to study abroad – why not chose a country which has a proven track record of an increasing number of satisfied students […]

Lithuanians among top bilingual nations in Europe

We often praise how Lithuanians are among top bilingual nations in Europe, but it gets even better with the recent survey from Eurobarometer (organized by the European Commision). This research showed that, on average, a single Lithuanian can converse in 2.7 languages. Another interesting metric is the median number of languages spoken. This number means that if you were to order all Lithuanians to stand in line – the guy or girl in the middle would speak exactly that number of languages. In our case – 2,5 means that about a half (45-55%) of Lithuanians speak 2 languages, and the […]
